Meals On Wheels Association of America Remembers Homebound & Hungry Senior Moms this Mother’s Day

Public Can Email Free Virtual Flower Bouquets to Loved Ones and Lonely Seniors via New Microsite

ALEXANDRIA, VA (April 12, 2010) - The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) has just launched a new campaign called “Meals for Moms” to raise awareness of all the homebound senior moms facing the threat of hunger this Mother’s Day (May 9th). By going to our new microsite, www.mealsformoms.org, visitors can now send a free virtual bouquet of flowers to anyone for Mother’s Day, including a homebound senior mom. MOWAA wants to send 10,000 e-cards for this Mother’s Day.

At mealsformoms.org, visitors can choose from a variety of flowers – including roses, tulips, and lilies - for their virtual bouquet. The free virtual bouquet e-card can be emailed to a loved one or be sent to a Meals On Wheels client. If someone selects that their bouquet go to a Meals On Wheels client, those e-cards will be printed out and distributed by Meals On Wheels programs, along with any special messages written by the card creators.

“Right now 1 in 9 seniors in our very own country face the real threat of hunger. These seniors are our mothers and grandmothers and aunts. All the mothers who worked so selflessly to raise their children – but are now elderly and alone without enough food to eat,” said MOWAA President and CEO Enid Borden. “I hope everyone will join us in our Meals for Moms campaign so that the hidden, hungry, and homebound senior moms are not forgotten this Mother’s Day.”

MOWAA-sponsored research has found that African-American women living in the South are most likely to face the risk of senior hunger. Our research also shows that she is most likely single, renting, and living with a grandchild. A staggering six million seniors are facing the risk of hunger and the numbers are growing.
