Association President and CEO Applauds Congressional Bipartisan Action
11/27/2013

On November 25, a bipartisan group of 48 U.S. Representatives sent a letter urging House and Senate budget leaders to protect funding for Meals on Wheels and other senior nutrition programs in any compromise agreement they reach. Only a couple of weeks before the December 13th deadline for the Budget Conference Committee to report a federal budget plan, this letter could not be more timely. The effort was led by Congressman Dave Loebsack of the Second District of Iowa and longtime advocate for Meals on Wheels and the vulnerable seniors they serve.

Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of the Meals On Wheels Association of America, described this latest action as, "an important bipartisan effort at a critical time for millions of hungry seniors.” She commended the 48 Members of Congress for signing onto the letter and for recognizing the tremendous social and economic value Meals on Wheels provides taxpayers.

Hollander went on to say, "The more than 5,000 Meals on Wheels and congregate nutrition programs across the country view themselves as part of the solution to our nation's fiscal challenges. We know that when seniors receive proper nutrition, a friendly visit and a daily safety check from a volunteer, they are able to remain healthier and out of nursing homes or hospitals—dramatically reducing health care costs often paid for through Medicare and Medicaid."

The Association remains hopeful that, when presented with the facts and strong case clearly articulated in this letter, Congress will resolve sequestration and stop the harmful cuts that have a direct impact on our nation's most hungry and vulnerable seniors.
