History:
In 2011, the MetLife Foundation generously awarded a $200,000 grant to the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) for the creation of a new “MetLife Foundation-MOWAA Excellence in Operations Award Program.” The program is designed to reduce food insecurity and hunger among seniors in ten targeted communities across the United States by increasing the quality of services provided by Meals On Wheels programs in those communities.
Impact:
Under the MetLife Foundation grant, MOWAA will develop a Meals On Wheels program self-assessment tool. Programs in the ten selected cities will use the tool to evaluate the operations of their organization against uniform national standards that are part of MOWAA’s Magnet Accreditation Program (MAP). Based on these evaluations, MOWAA will develop training sessions and other tools that will assist programs in implementing changes to bring them into compliance with MAP standards.
MOWAA will also work with experts to develop a prototype nutrition risk assessment tool. This tool will allow programs to better prioritize and target nutrition services to those in greatest need in their communities. Currently, there is no appropriate standard nutrition risk assessment tool developed solely for Meals On Wheels progams to use.
