Around Mother’s Day, visitors can go to MealsforMoms.org and choose from a variety of flowers – including roses, tulips, and lilies – to create their virtual bouquet. E-cards sent to homebound senior moms are printed out and distributed by Meals On Wheels programs across the country – along with special messages written by the card creators. In 2010, about 7,000 messages of hope were sent to senior moms from New York to California who depend on Meals On Wheels to survive.
Money raised from this campaign goes into MOWAA’s Meals for Moms Fund. The Fund will help Meals On Wheels programs across the U.S. feed homebound senior moms around Mother's Day the following year. The success of the first Meals for Moms campaign inspired MOWAA to make this an annual campaign.
After discovering through research (linked) that seniors most likely to be at risk of hunger are women under the age of 70, African-American, unmarried, and living in the South, MOWAA started its first Meals for Moms campaign.
Here are just a few of the messages of hope that were delivered to homebound senior moms for Mother’s Day, thanks to our Meals for Moms campaign:
“Happy Mothers Day. Although we cannot meet, I am here caring for you in spirit.”
“I hope you have a wonderful mothers day! We all know its not easy raising a child and all mothers should get some credit for doing such an important job! So, happy Mother’s Day!”
“Mother's are special! I wouldn't be today the person I am if it wasn't for my great Mother (and Grandma too)! Happy Mother's Day. Hugs & kisses to all.”
