Historic March Protesting Senior Hunger to Take Place During MOWAA's Atlanta Conference

Hundreds of Meals On Wheels representatives will march across Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta this Wednesday, September 1st, to protest the growing number of seniors in Georgia who face the threat of hunger.  The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is organizing the event, called “Turning the Tables on Senior Hunger,” which will be led by MOWAA President & CEO Enid Borden and Jeffery Smythe, the Executive Director for Senior Citizen Services of Metropolitan Atlanta.  Prior to the march, MOWAA will hold a rally calling for more support to end this disturbing trend which has only worsened during our economic downturn...
Meals On Wheels Programs Across the U.S. Awarded Bank of America Charitable Foundation Grants to Restore Meals to Homebound Seniors

The Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is awarding special grants to 41 local Meals On Wheels programs across the U.S. thanks to a national grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. Half of the bank’s $500,000 grant to Meals on Wheels is being used to develop the Emergent Meal Grant Program, which will allow those struggling Meals On Wheels programs to restore meals that were cut because of the stressed economy...
New Federal Report Details Seniors Living Longer but Facing Challanges

Older Americans 2010: Key Indicators of Well-Being  is a comprehensive look at aging in the United States. This is the fifth report prepared by the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics. "The demographics of aging continue to change dramatically. The older population is growing rapidly, and the aging of the baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964 (and who begin turning age 65 in 2011), will accelerate this growth... New Census Bureau Report: Aging Boomers Will Increase Dependency Ratio

The U.S. Census Bureau now reports that the dependency ratio (the number of people 65 and older to every 100 people of traditional working ages) is projected to climb from 22 in 2010 to 35 in 2030. This time period coincides with the time when baby boomers are moving into the 65 and older age category. “This rapid growth of the older population may present challenges in the next two decades,” according to Victoria Velkoff, assistant chief for estimates and projections for the Census Bureau's Population Division, who is quoted in a new release from the Bureau.
