FeelGoodFood Project

This partnership involves the MOWAA Foundation, local Meals On Wheels programs and Humana. Through this partnership, home-delivered meals and telephone reassurance contacts are provided to Humana’s Medicare members (in select Humana markets) upon their discharge from hospitals and other inpatient facilities.

MOWAA subcontracts with local meal providers in each of the areas to provide these services to Humana members who elect to take advantage of the program. Meals are purchased by the Foundation and shipped to local programs. In addition to delivering meals (a one-time delivery of the 10-meal package), the local meal programs make up to seven follow-up telephone reassurance calls, depending on the number that each Humana member desires. To date, nearly 25% of the Humana members have been referred for evaluation for participation in community-based programs, which could include ongoing Meals On Wheels services, transportation or other services as needed. Many of these Humana members would never have known about the availability of other senior services had it not been for the FeelGoodFood project.

Project Benefits:

  1. The initial contact between Humana members and local Meals On Wheels programs has proven to be the access point for many frail individuals to other services that support their lives in the community.

  2. The project has raised public awareness about the connection between proper nutrition (delivered through Meals On Wheels) and health, about the Foundation and its mission and about Humana’s dual commitment to its own members and to the support the Foundation’s efforts to eradicate senior hunger.

  3. Through the program, we have begun to demonstrate how proper nutrition contributes to the recovery and well-being of Medicare clients.

  4. FeelGoodFood provides an ongoing source of revenue to both the Foundation and to local programs that are paid on a per capita basis for providing the services to Humana members.
